In 1994, set the NCAA record for most three-pointers in an NCAA Tournament which remains intact for a five-game series. Received the W. Alfred Hayes Award for outstanding student-athlete at Washington U. Went on to law school and in 2002 was appointed the first female and youngest Supreme Court Justice of the Cherokee Nation. Since 2011, served as the Dean of the University of Arkansas School of Law.

Furthered his playing career at Westark Community College (now the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith) before finishing at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

A 1989 graduate of Muskogee High School who earned All-State honors in football and was a three-time State Tournament qualifier in wrestling. 

Wrestling - He was the Oklahoma Eastern Regional Champion and State Runner-Up at Heavyweight his senior season. 

Football - All-State selection and selected as a captain for the East All-State Football Team. Butler attended Oklahoma State University on a full football scholarship where he was a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner at right tackle. After completing his career with the Cowboys, he went on to become a member of Tom Osborne's staff at the University of Nebraska as a strength and conditioning coach including the 1994 Cornhuskers football team that won the NCAA National Chaampionship. Butler later served in the same capacity on Lou Holtz's staff at the University of Notre Dame.

Elmer Mayes began his career at Salder Junior High where he played EVERY position except quarterback. A 1969 graduate of Manual Training High School, Mayes was a four-year starter at defensive back for the Bulldogs coached by Albert Shoats from 1965-1969 that included back-to-back 10-1 seasons. Mayes also proved his talents as a standout running back and kick return specialist for Manual Training. Known to his friends as "Sardine," Mayes record-setting athletic performances on the football field, including a 105-yard touchdown return, would earn him a scholarship to Langston University as a member of the Lions football program. A grandfather of five, Mayes worked for the Tulsa County Highway Department before completing his career and retiring as lead foreman at Big 4 Foundries.

1962 Muskogee Central graduate where he lettered in tennis and basketball. Tennis was Vance's first love. He was a state high school doubles champion as a junior and singles semi-finalist as a senior. Vance attended the University of Oklahoma on a full tennis scholarship where as a junior he was the team's co-captain and won the Big 8 conference #1 doubles title. He was selected team captain as a senior, winning Conference #3 singles and #2 doubles championships and leading the OU Sooners to their first-ever Big 8 Tennis Championship. Vance and his doubles partner were ranked #1 in Oklahoma and Missouri Valley in multiple age divisions through the years. Vance is currently a member of the Oklahoma Tennis Hall of Fame and was instrumental in the Hall of Fame being permanently housed in the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. He was elected the first President of the Oklahoma Tennis E&R Foundation.

Graduated in 2008. Four-time Class 6A state qualifier earning All-State honors her senior year with a 13 event scoring average of 79.6 by recording seven Top 10 finishes. 

Three-year NCAA Regional Qualifier at the University of Central Oklahoma. Part of UCO's first women's golf team to qualify for NCAA National Championship tournament. 

Four-year Student Athlete Academic Scholar. 

Four-year member of UCO's Emerging Leaders. 

2012 recipient of UCO Athletics Community Involvement Award. UCO Graduate Assistant Coach for women's golf team. In 2013 and 2014, she helped coach the UCO women's golf team to two MIAA Conference Championship titles, two NCAA Regional Championship titles, qualifying for the NCAA Championship Tournament both years. 

John Perry

Track

John received special recognition as one of the most dominant collegiate 440/880 runners of the 20th Century by sports writers from The Oklahoman. As a member of Muskogee's 1962 track team that finished third at State, John was the undefeated state champion in the 440. He attended Oklahoma State University where he won the Big 8 Conference half mile title in 1965 and 1966, set the Big 8 record and earned individual NCAA All-American honors. He also ran on the Cowboys two-mile relay team that set the World REcord in 1965 and won NCAA Indoor Championships in both 1965 and 1966. After graduation from OSU, John served in the Marine Corps as an Officer and Naval Aviator. His service included service in Vietnam where he flew 164 combat missions as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. After military service, John worked for Continental Airlines and retired as a Boeing 767 Captain.

Served Muskogee softball program for over 20 years as a volunteer coach. He was instrumental in the success of Muskogee three state championship teams (1998, 2000, 2009). Sands is a member of the ASA Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Hal started coaching youth softball in 1985, coaching several Muskogee area teams that town state titles and World Series championships. He began his stay with the MHS staff in 1987 where he coached until 2010. 

Zack Saunders

Zach Saunders

Baseball

A four year member of the Roughers baseball team, Saunders graduated from Muskogee in 1999. Played two seasons at Connors State College and Kansas State where he played third base and catcher (2003, 2004). 

Began coaching career as an assistant at Southwestern Oklahoma State. After six seasons as lead assistant, was named head coach of the Bulldogs in 2012. Earned his 100th victory at SWOSU on April 24, 2015 and led them to a winning record four times along with a berth in the Great American Conference Tournament during four of his five seasons. In 2015, Saunders squad won the GAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Central Regional baseball championship tournament and was voted Great American Conference coach of the year for the second time (2013, 2016). 

Lynwood Wade

Basketball

Graduate in 1990, Wade earned All-State honors his senior season after leading the Roughers to the state tournament. Played collegiate ball at Paris Junior College for two seasons and averaged 17 points per game and played in the TEC All-Star game. Played at Texas State University from 1993-1994 where he led them to the Southland Conference tournament championship and was MVP after ranking second in the nation among NCAA Division I schools with a 65% field goal percentage. Led Texas State to their first NCAA Division I postseason appearance. A two-time SLC 1st Team All-Conference selection and 1993 Newcomer of the Year. Named to the SLC 1990's All-Decade team. Wade then played 10 season professionally. Voted one of the all-time top imports in New Zealand and was All-Star game MVP in Holland and dunk champion. A 20-year veteran of high school coaching circles, Wade served as head coach at Tulsa East Central High School where his 2016 team advanced to the Class 5A State Tournament. Green Country Conference Coach of the Year in 2016 and chosen by his peers to coach the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-Star game in 2016. Currently the head boy's basketball coach at Muskogee High School.

1971 graduate of MHS. Member of the Rougher Golf Team for three years. One of the five on the 1970 Oklahoma 7 Conference Championship. Regional Championship and State Championship Team. Runner up to teammate Joey Dills in 1970 for individual honors in the state high school tournament All-State in 1970. State junior qualifying medalist in 1970. Individual regional medalist in 1971. Member and letterman of Oral Roberts University golf team and a graduate of the University of Tulsa with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Treasurer of the Rougher Football Booster Club for five years during the coaching tenures of Ron Lancaster and Matt Hennesy and treasurer of the MHS Running Club under Coach David Heath. Both clubs established as a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational entity during his term as treasurer. Also treasurer of the Muskogee Education Foundation, the Oklahoma Foundation for the Education of Blind Children & Youth, St. Joseph School Foundation, and other civic clubs and organizations. Jim is a Senior Vice President at BancFirst. He and his wife, Kathy, live in Muskogee and have one son James and his wife Michaela. 

Jenna (Miller) Smith

Jenna Miller-Smith

A 2001 graduate of MHS. Jenna was a four-year member of the MHS varsity basketball and softball teams, the Rougherettes. One of the first Muskogee female athletes to earn All-State in three sports in the same year. She earned multiple All-Conference team awards in basketball and softball. 2001 MVP basketball and softball. Optimist Female Athlete of the Year Award and a senior in the 2000-2001 season led her team in points, rebounds, steals, and blocked shots. She continued her career as a proud Lady Red on the Northeastern State University women's basketball team lettering four years and playing for Coach Randy Gipson. In 2005, she became a member of the Lone Star All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. Received her Bachelor's in Marketing and followed with a Registered Nurse degree from the University of Arkansas. Married her soulmate Dalton Smith in 2013 in beautiful Colorado with her parents Mea Anderson, Brent Anderson, Kenny Miller, and Shirley Miller in attendance. Currently, Jenna resides in Bartlesville, Okla. Has two fascinating and creative children, Sailor and Violet Smith. Owns and operates Osage Oils, a natural health care company that shares holistic remedies using essential oils. Enjoys being a stay-at-home mom and can still take her husband in a game of one-on-one basketball! 

Robert J. Perkins

Robert Perkins

The contributions of Robert Perkins to the youth of Muskogee are matchless. The third child of Clarence and Ardella Perkins, he was a three-year starter for Manual Training Bulldogs football teams coached by Walter Cox. In 1954, he attended Bacone College pursuing a degree in Accounting. Established the Paul Young Football League and for 25 years helped Muskogee youth as well as collegiate and pro football players. 

Perkins served as Gas Service Specialist with Oklahoma Natural Gas. Member of the Muskogee City Council for 12 years and eight years as Vice-Mayor. Perkins is a past President and member of McCoy's Youth Services. Named Muskogee Man of the Year in 1987 by Sertoma Club of Muskogee and Volunteer Award winner by Zeta Phi Beta in 1991. Received the Children's Foster Parent Award by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services in 1989. A deacon and choir member of Rayfield Baptist Church. 

Perkins is a member of Promise Keepers. Married to Constance Perkins for 40 years before the love of his life passed in 1995. They share five children; Sheila, Robert Jr., Stanley, Kenneth, and Steve Perkins as well as their grandchildren. 

The city of Muskogee, Muskogee Public Schools, and Roughers athletics are all the beneficiaries thanks to the lifelong contributions of Robert J. Perkins. 

David Perry

David Perry

Dave is the most successful "walk-on" athlete in Oklahoma State University track team history. 

Competed for Muskogee Central, under Bob Matthews and was a member of the Rougher's superb 880-yard relay team. Was a long shot when he enrolled at OSU and "walked-on" to the OSU Track Team two years after graduating from Muskogee Central. In 1965, he received the OSU Outstanding Track Athlete Award. Earned All-American and All-Big 8 honors. Anchorman of the OSU World Record, NCAA Champion, and Relay Triple Crown Champion two-mile relay team in 1965. 

In 1965, only two Oklahoma Collegiate runners in history had run faster than 1:50 flat for 880. Dave ran a 1:47.7 for the 880 run in the 1965 Southern Track Federation Meet in Houston. It was two seconds faster than previous attempts by an Oklahoman. His brother John equaled that time in 1966 but since then no OSU runner has beaten it. Holds two OSU individual records, was on four OSU school-record relay teams, and was the anchorman of three National Champion relay teams. 

After graduation, Dave competed for the Pacific Coast Club and had a career in financial services. Now owns an independent firm in Corpus Christi, Texas. Founding member of the Saltwater Fisheries-Enhancement Association. 

Joseph Ballard III

A 1998 graduate of MHS who was a three-year starter as a running back for the Roughers. Ballard helped guide the Roughers to the state semi-finals against Midwest City in the final four of the state championship playoffs. Received 6A-3 Offensive Player of the Year his senior season. Also a two-year starter in basketball. Ballard started all four-years for the Roughers in baseball. He received All-State honors his senior year. Played football and baseball at Missouri Southern State University. While there, Ballard became first athlete to win MIAA Conference Freshman of the Year in both sports. He earned three MIAA honorable mention honors in football and was a four-time All-MIAA in baseball including Honorable Mention three times and was named Second Team All-MIAA his senior season. He ranks in the top 10 in several career categories: 4th in career runs (204) and walks (146). Fifth in stolen bases (62) and triples (12) as well as sixth in at-bats (692) and hits (226). He ranks ninth in games played (199) and is tied with many others for the MSSU single-game record with five hits. In football, he holds the record for most passes caught by a RB in a career (72) and most receiving yards by a RB in a single-season (377) in 1998 and in a career (772). Holds MSSU career record for punt returns (75), punt return yards (699), and kickoff returns (47). Ballard is 10th in single-season scoring in MSSU history with 72 points in 1998. 

Robert Flanary

1970 graduate of Muskogee Central High School. Three year letterman in football as a cornerback and selected to All-Oklahoma 7 Conference team. Also a three-year letterman in baseballs as an outfielder. Lifetime batting average over .333. Earned All-Conference and honorable mention All-State in baseball. Attended Bacone College which was a two-year junior college at the time. While there was a two-year letterman as an outfielder and had a batting average over .300. After Bacone, he attended NSU and graduate with an Accounting and Business Administration Degree. Supported the Roughers by attending home games and is an avid golfer. Robert passed away this summer after a brief illness. He lived in Muskogee and worked for Glover Construction at the time of his death. Accepting Robert's award is his wife, Shirley, his high school sweetheart. Shirley was a varsity head cheerleader, Rougher Football Party Maid of Honor and Basketball Queen. Robert had one son, Scott, who lives in Wichita, Kansas with his wife Adriana Cobos and their children Faith and Mariano. 

Shelia Hambrick

Muskogee High School Cheerleading Coach

While serving the students and faculty as library media specialist. Sheila Hambrick began her work with the cheerleading programs in Muskogee in the last 1970's at Alice Robertson Junior High School. Sheila coached the Freshman Cheerleading Squad, Spirit Steppers Dance Team, and worked with the pep club. In the late 1980's Hambrick was asked to take over the coaching duties at Muskogee High School with the Roughers varsity cheerleading squad, a position she kept until the late 1990's. During this time the MHS cheer squads competed in numerous state competitions and always won top honors at summer cheer camps. The one thing Sheila enjoyed most about being a cheerleading coach was being able to work with the girls and watching them succeed. 

Sheila was an active member of the Oklahoma Coaches Association. In 1996, the Oklahoma Coaches Association Cheerleading coaches voted Hambrick the All-State Games Cheerleading coach for the East. This was a big honor for Hambrick and to make it even better one of her cheerleaders was also a member of the cheer squad. 

Sheila Hambrick retired from teaching in 2014 after 45 years with Muskogee Public Schools. 

Darrell Wood

Darrell is a 1973 graduate of MHS. Three-year starter don't he baseball team. His last two years he was All-Conference and Alternate All-State. He then attended Claremore Junior College on a baseball scholarship and was All-District. Participated in baseball at Northeastern State University where he earned his Bachelor's of Science. His career in education began in 1978 and ended in 2014, which included positions with Muskogee as well as Hilldale and Oktaha Public Schools. During this time, he coached baseball, softball, and basketball. His fast pitch record was 604 wins and 135 losses. His slow pitch record was 410 wins and 147 losses. In softball, his teams won one State Championship in 2006, had 16 State Tournament appearances and Regional Titles, and 24 District Titles. He has been recognized as District 7 Softball Coach of the Year, All-State Softball Coach in 2004 and 2006. Also a representative for District 3, state ranker, served on both fast and slow pitch boards, and the All-State selection committees at different times. Inducted into the Oklahoma fast and slow pitch Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014. Mr. Wood was a part of 25 state tournaments as a baseball player, baseball coach, girls basketball coach, and softball coach. 

He has been married to his wife Beverly for 40 years and raised three children - Matthew, Joshua, and Cassidi. They have seven grandchildren.

From his childhood beginnings as a student at Cherokee Elementary School, Stacy McGee was determined to prove to one and all you can achieve your dreams. Considered to be one of the best defensive football players to ever wear the Green and White, Stacy McGee anchored the Legion of Doom defense during his career from 2005 to 2007 as coach Matt Hennesy's Roughers reached the Class 6A State Semifinals all three seasons while gaining All-State honors following his senior season. 

The son of Stacy and Sabrina Coleman, McGee was equally dominant on the high school wrestling mat as a two-time Class 6A state placer in 2007 and 2008 for coach Bobby Jefferson's wrestling team including a State Champion gold medal in 2008. 

Following graduation from Muskogee High School, McGee continued his gridiron heroics on the Sooners defensive line at the University of Oklahoma where he earned a degree in Human Relations. Drafted by Oakland in the sixth round of the 2013 National Football League draft, McGee spent the first four years of his professional football career on the defensive front with the Raiders. In 2017 with his wife Daila and daughter Gemma at his side, McGee signed a five-year contract with the Washington Football Team. 

Robert Thomas

Since his childhood days growing up on North 10th Street in Muskogee, Robert Thomas dreamed of one day playing football in the National Football League. A key figure in the success of the Roughers football teams from 2006 to 2008, the son of Roslynn Thomas and grandson of Sonya and Robert Thomas helped Muskogee reach the Class 6A playoffs including the State Semifinals in 2006 and 2007.

After graduation from Muskogee High School in 2009, Thomas took his football talents to the next level playing the game he loves at Coffeyville (Kan.) Junior College then earning a starters role in the defensive lineup for the Arkansas Razorbacks while earning a degree in Sociology.

Undrafted out of college, Thomas was determined to reach his goal and would be signed in 2014 to the roster of the Washington Football Team. 

With his wife Kayla and son Raylen as a driving force to succeed, Thomas' career has continued ever since as a member of seven NFL teams including the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants, and most recently a member of the Buffalo Bills. 

Hannah Hamilton Newman

Described as one of the best athletes ever to wear the Lady Roughers softball uniform, Hannah Hamilton was a four-year starter in both fastpitch and slowpitch softball. A starter on Muskogee's first fastpitch team in school history to reach the state tournament, Hamilton was named as the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Class 6A Slowpitch Softball State Championship team. 

After earning Newcomer of the Year honors in 2007, the talented athlete was chosen as the Muskogee Phoenix Most Valuable Player three years in a row (2008-2010) and was named the Muskogee PHoenix Female Athlete of the Year in 2010 as well as earning her position on the All-Decade softball team. Aschool record holder in multiple offensive categories, she earned Oklahoma All-State honors her senior year as an outfielder in slowpitch softball. Hamilton signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Connors State College. Hamilton and her husband Wes Newman welcomed the arrival of their daughter, Claire, in 2017. 

Tony Stark

After breaking into the starting lineup as a sophomore, Tony Stark was a three-year starter in baseball playing for coaches Jiggs Whittington and Enos Semore from 1960-1962. The talented outfielder finished his career compiling a .390 batting average and earning All-State honors for his senior season efforts. Following graduation from Muskogee Central in 1962, Stark played one season at Bacone for coach Semore and Ken Hayes including the 1964 season when Stark produced a .340 batting average to lead the Warriors to a 34-5 season and advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament and a fifth-place finish. Stark joined the Oklahoma State University baseball team under coach Chet Bryant in 1965 as the Cowboys center fielder making an immediate impact by leading the Big Eight Conference in hitting the first half of the season and finishing the year with a .315 average as the Cowboys finished third in the conference standings.

After college, Stark continued his winning ways as the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Parkwood High School in Joplin, Missouri from 1969 to 1979. 

Stark entered private business in 1980 joining Empire District Electric Company as part of a 26-year career including serving as the company's Director of Corporate Planning and Vice President of General Services. 

2019

Jacobe Smith

A noted wrestler at MHS, Smith set a school career record with match wins with 129 and at the end of that career, was a 2014 state champion after a runner-up finish in 2013 and member of two runner-up Dual State squads. He went on to Northeastern A&M where he was a two-time national champion then from there to Oklahoma State where after a 15-0 redshirt year in open tournaments, he was named to the 2018-19 Big 12 championship team and an individual champion at the Big 12 championships. He is currently training for a possible Olympic wrestling bid and a professional career either as a wrestler or in Mixed Martial Arts. He is married and he and his wife Meagan have one son, Kendel Rey Smith.

Bob Branan

Branan’s 19-year career as head baseball coach at Muskogee followed his hiring in 1973 as a  volunteer coach under the late John Leafer. In 1976 he became a full-time educator and assistant baseball coach and in 1977 became Head Coach for Muskogee Baseball. His record of 420-290 was highlighted by a 31-4 mark in 1982. He was instrumental in capital improvements to the baseball facility including lights and  an indoor training facility and was also active in the little league system in Muskogee, serving a stint as director of the  then-named Muskogee Knothole Association. On two occasions, Branan was a sports writer for the Muskogee Phoenix and also worked for the Tulsa World, and also served as media relations director at Connors State. Branan, a 1963 graduate of Muskogee Central High, died in 2010 and is survived by his wife Sharon, son Michael, daughter Lori and three grandchildren.

Madison Reed

Reed was a two-time all-state selection and three times was selected All-Phoenix as well as multiple all-academic and region honors. She set a school record  in stolen bases with 34 in fastpitch and was a member of the slowpitch state championship squad in 2009. She was also selected to the Phoenix’s All-Decade team of the 2000's. She played collegiately, first at Missouri Southern then at Northeastern State, setting single-season record in stolen bases with 21 and career runs with 97.  As a senior, she was a captain on the first NSU team to earn a conference championship bid. Today she serves as a cross fit coach and trainer and exercise physiologist in Tulsa who also coaches youth softball.

Paige Gann

Gann played on four Softball state tournament teams, and was All-State in both fastpitch and slowpitch and a three-time All-Phoenix area team member. She went on to Northeastern State and set single season and career home run records and was the school’s RBI record holder when she graduated in 2018.  The four-time MIAA award winner was selected first team in 2017 and was voted D2’s Most Feared Hitter in 2017 as well as NSU’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2018. She currently is an assistant manager and personal trainer at a fitness facility at Prosper, Texas, near Dallas, and will be applying to dental school in December.

Seth Condley

Condley was a three-year letterman and starter in both soccer and football. The 1996 All-State soccer selection was captain of the first Muskogee team to make the state playoffs. He was recruited by Northeastern State in that sport but chose instead to be a preferred walk-on at Oklahoma State, where he earned a scholarship in 2000 as he was also a Lou Groza Award semifinalist as one of the nation’s top placekickers. He was a member of the Alamo Bowl team in 1997 and academic All-Big 12 in 2000-01. As a footballer in Muskogee he was All-District, All-Conference and played on two postseason teams, reaching the semifinals in 1994. He has gone on to a coaching career at Stillwater High School Boys Soccer since 2004, a stint that includes six playoff games and a state championship in 2017. He is a three-time All-State Head Coach on the boys side and became girls coach in 2019.

Richard Theimer

Richard Theimer played tennis at MHS and was a three-time state champion, twice in doubles and once as a Senior in No. 2 singles in the 1960s. He signed with the University of Oklahoma and lettered on one Big Eight championship team. He was USTA ranked nationally for three years in singles and was a Missouri Valley Tennis Association champion in doubles. He ran the public parks tennis program for the City of Norman and was also an assistant tennis pro at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa and later built a contracting business for construction and resurfacing of tennis courts. He lives in Princeton, Texas. His wife Cindy passed in March. He has a son, Beau, who lives in Midland, Texas with his wife and son.

Jack Theimer

Jack Theimer won three state titles in the 1960s, two in  doubles and one in singles. He also went to OU on scholarship and won three Big Eight singles titles and two Big Eight doubles titles. He reached the third round of the NCAA championships in both 1969 and 1970 and had a successful run on the USTA circuit, winning the Missouri Valley doubles  and Arkansas Open doubles. He opened the Redlands Racquet Club in Norman and Shadow Mountain Racquet Club in Tulsa, both in the 1970s. In the early 80s he built the Kiva Tennis Complex in Beaver Creek, Colorado, organizing and hosting both the Bank of  Oklahoma Tennis Classic at Shadow Mountain and the Kiva Tennis Classic which featured many top 10 international players. From 1978 to 1982 he served on the Board of Directors of the North American Tennis Directors Association, overseeing all ATP professional events in North America. He is presently a businessman, attorney and presidential appointee to the FDR Memorial Commission and lives in Santa Barbara, Calif.  He has a daughter, Hillary Theimer and son, Jeffrey Theimer.

2020

Angelique Hillmon

a 1982 graduate of Muskogee High School, led the Rougherette basketball team to a State Finals appearance in 1982. A two-time All-Conference selection, Hillmon continued her playing career at Eastern Oklahoma State College where she led EOSC to multiple conference, state, and regional championships. She helped the Lady Mountaineers to a National Tournament berth and an eighth-place finish. She holds the EOSC record for assists. 

 

She transferred to the University of Colorado where she completed her career. Upon completion of college, Hillmon joined the teaching staff at Muskogee High School a position she has held for the last 27 years. She has twice been named Site Educator of the Year and has served as a speaker at Convocation. During her time at her alma mater, she has coached girl’s basketball, cross country, and track. She was the first woman to coach a male team not only as cross country coach but as an assistant on former boy's basketball coach Terry Scott's staff. 

 

She is married to Kerry Hillmon and is the mother to Kristian and Devin Hillmon. She has long displayed a heart for civic service serving as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Muskogee Education Association, and the Oklahoma Coaches Association. 

Dawaylon Barnes

A 2014 graduate of Muskogee High School, earned a State Championship in 2014 as a wrestler after a Runner-Up finish in 2011. He spent five years wrestling for the Roughers beginning as an eighth-grader. 

 

He was a vital cog in the well oiled Muskogee Wrestling machine. He earned a 2012 Junior National Team third-place finish, 2012 All-American fourth-place finish, and twice placed at State and was the 2014 Male Student-Athlete of the Year during his time in the green and white. 

 

He went onto Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Okla. where he was an Academic All-American in 2015 and 2016, a district champion and National Champion in 2016. He transferred to the University of Oklahoma to continue his career. During his time with the Sooners, he earned the 2018 “Most Improved” award and was a 2018 NCAA Qualifier prior to completing his degree. 

 

Barnes is a Mechanical Engineer at KBR and is currently attending the University of Oklahoma pursuing a Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

Keith Coleman

a 1997 graduate of Muskogee High School, was a three-sport athlete during his time at Muskogee. A three-time football letterman, Coleman led the 1994 team to a Class 6A State Semifinals appearance and a 1995 Quarterfinals appearance while earning All-District and All-Area honors along the way. Coleman was a three-time wrestling letterman and helped the Roughers to a 1997 Class 6A Semifinal appearance. He was also a three-time Baseball letterman helping MHS to a 1997 Regional Final while earning All-District and Green Country All-Star recognition. 

 

Coleman continued his academic and athletic career at East Central University in Ada, Okla. where he played every game as a freshman for the Tigers football team. He then transferred to Crowder College where he earned All-Region honors in back-to-back years for the Roughriders on the baseball diamond. His collegiate baseball career continued at Cumberland University where he ushered the team to a conference championship and Super Regional Final in 2001. 

 

Upon the completion of his playing career, Coleman focused on joining the coaching ranks. He became head softball coach at Muskogee High School a position he held from 2005 to 2016. He totaled over 500 wins, 12 regional titles, a state runner-up finish, an Academic state title, and in 2009 claimed a state title for Muskogee High. 

 

Coleman has been named District Coach of the Year 11 times, is a five-time Region Coach of the Year, two-time Tulsa World Coach of the Year, and was named All-Decade Coach by the Muskogee Phoenix. He currently serves as head softball coach at Piedmont High School where he won the Class 5A State Fastpitch Title in 2019. Coleman has over 600 wins as a head coach and led the Wildcats to a State Runner-Up finish in 2017.

Shonika Breedlove

A 1994 graduate of Muskogee High School, was a standout basketball player for the Roughers helping MHS to four consecutive state tournament appearances. A three-time girl’s basketball letter winner, Shonika was an All-State honoree as a senior. 

 

She went on to play at Eastern Oklahoma State College for two years where she was recognized as the Larry Stone Female Player of the Year and tallied 38 points to set the record for most points in a home game. She continued her career at the University of Oklahoma where she earned First Team Academic All-Conference recognition as a junior as a member of Sherri Coale's first Sooner squad. 

 

Upon graduation, Breedlove began her coaching career first at Connor State College before being named head coach at Boyton a position she held from 2002 to 2008. She returned home as the lead assistant coach for the Roughers girls basketball team and held the position for eight years before being named head coach of MHS in 2016 and led the Roughers until 2019. 

 

She currently serves as a district administrator for Muskogee Public Schools and is the mother of Savannah Breedlove-Corbin.

Phil Givens

Class of 1971 graduate and standout athlete Phil Stanley Givens was a three-year letterwinner and one of the most feared hitters in Rougher football history. He played both linebacker and cornerback, leading his team in tackles, assists, and tackles for loss. As a senior, Givens helped lead the Roughers to the only undefeated season in school history. Phil was a three-time All-Conference selection and has the prestigious notoriety of being the first black player named to the All-State team after the integration of Muskogee High School. 

Phil was heavily recruited by the likes of OU, OSU, and NSU prior to a severe knee injury suffered during the All-State game. Phil recovered after taking a year off and completed his career at Northeastern State University. Phil was recognized as the Linebacker of the Century by the Muskogee Phoenix. 

Phil presently is a farmer, business consultant, and well known civil rights advocate. He has testified in front of Congress seven times over USDA discriminatory practices. He and his wife, the late Francine Givens, have four children; Brian, Kelley, Robert, and Yona. 

Rusty Bradley

Rusty Bradley was a 1976 graduate of Muskogee High. A standout in the sport of boys tennis, Rusty earned the conference #1 singles crown every year from his freshman to the his senior year. Bradley topped those performances by becoming a state finalist as a #1 singles player as a junior and ultimately State Champion in 1976. 

Rusty went onto the University of Tulsa where he continued his dominance as both a singles and a doubles player. He twice earned the Missouri Valley Conference championship in singles and doubles finishing with a collegiate singles record of 89 wins and 23 loses that earned him the MVP award as both a freshman and a senior. 

His stellar play was only matched by his coaching prowess. Rusty went on to become the MHS head coach for 27 years and had the distinction of qualifying players for state every year of his coaching career. In total, Coach Bradley coached numerous regional champions and All-Staters and three individual State Champions. 

As a coach, Rusty was recognized as an All-State Coach of the Year (2014) and Regional Coach of the Year (2000) and was inducted into the Oklahoma Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2019). Rusty is the father of two sons, Russ Jr. and Shan, who both played for the Roughers. He is the husband of Shelli Bradley. 

Tim Brewer

A graduate of the class of 1985, Tim Brewer was a boys basketball standout performer. AS a senior he tallied All-Conference, All-District, All-Area, and All-State Tournament honors. While leading his team to the '85 state tournament he led the team in field goal percentage, rebounding, and free-throw percentage. 

Brewer then went to Western Arkansas Junior College where he earned All-Conference honors and was a two year starter while helping his team to the National Junior College Tournament both years. Following graduation, Brewer attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington before finishing up at Northeastern State University. At NSU, Brewer was named Team MVP and was an All-Conference selection while leading his team in scoring, rebounding, shooting percentage, and free throw percentage. 

Tim was honored to serve as local and regional President of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He and his wife Brandy have two boys who are tremendous students currently attending Oklahoma, Kolby, and Rice University, Kayden, respectively.

2021

Dan Jefferson

A graduate from Muskogee High School in 2000, Dan Jefferson was a three-sport standout for the Roughers as a four-year letter winner in football, wrestling and baseball from 1996 through 2000. Jefferson, who played running back and linebacker, helped lead the Roughers football team to four playoff appearances, accumulating over 400-plus career tackles. On the wrestling mat, Jefferson’s career record was 121 wins and only 32 losses over four years as a three-time state placer finishing fourth as a sophomore, third place as a junior and state runner-up his senior year in 2000. Jefferson helped the Muskogee wrestling team three district championships to earn three appearances in the Dual State tournaments. His career accomplishments earned Jefferson a place on the East All-State wrestling team in 2000.  On the baseball diamond, Jefferson helped lead Muskogee to a runner-up finish in the 1998 state tournament including a game-tying home run in the seventh inning and a relief pitching victory over Edmond North in the state semifinals. His career totals include a .404 batting average with 21 home runs while earning a 21-9 record on the pitching mound.  On the collegiate level, Jefferson played football at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M earning All-Conference honors at linebacker to help the Golden Norsemen to a number-3 finish and a trip to the Red River Bowl. After a red-shirt season at the University of Oklahoma in 2003, Jefferson finished his college career at Missouri Southern from 2003 through 2005. Jefferson began his coaching career as an assistant for the Roughers wrestling program from 2005 through 2013 including the 2010 season when Muskogee won the Dual State Championship in 2010. Jefferson also served his alma mater as an assistant football coach and cross-country coach. Since leaving Muskogee, Jefferson has continued his career as the wrestling coach at Bixby along with his current position at Union High School. Jefferson has coached 96 state qualifiers, 51 state place winners, 8 state champions and 16 state runner-ups along with 24 Oklahoma All-State wrestlers. In addition to the victories on the mat, Jefferson’s wrestling teams have received 10 Academic Team Achievement Awards. Jefferson was selected the Large East All-State coach in 2021.  He and his wife Leslie have two daughters, Hazel and Magnolia. 

Shereka Jones

A 2006 graduate of Muskogee High School, Shereka Jones has always been a model of the Rougher spirit of success. A four-year member of the Muskogee cheerleader teams, Jones was captain of the squad in 2006 and was chosen as an All-State cheerleader in her senior year, the first in school history. A state qualifier in track with the Lady Roughers, Jones set a school record in the 300m hurdles in 2006 with a time of 46.52, a mark that stands to current day. Jones also ran on the 4x100m relay team in 2005 and 2006.  In addition to her athletic achievements, Jones was a four-year member of the National Honor Society while compiling a 4.75 GPA. Following graduation from high school, Jones continued her road to success attending the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of the small co-ed cheerleading teams in 2006 and 2007, another first for a Muskogee graduate to cheer at the NCAA Division-I level. While still in college, Jones began her professional career as a dancer and cheerleader with the Oklahoma City YardDawgz in 2007 through 2009 before earning a position on the dance and cheerleader team with the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2008 through 2015 serving as team captain for seven years. Her professional achievements include her current position with Edwards Life Science as a Field Clinical Specialist for the trans catheter aortic heart valve replacements division. 

Catrina Pearson Morrow

A 2012 graduate of Muskogee High School, Catrina (Pearson) Morrow is one of Muskogee’s most decorated women golfer as a four-time qualifier for the Class 6A state golf tournament.  Morrow qualified individually in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and was the number one bag on the Lady Roughers golf team that qualified for state her senior year. In the 2012 state tournament, Morrow earned a fourth place individual finish to secure Oklahoma All-State girls golf honors as well earning All-Conference honors in her junior and senior seasons. Morrow, at the age of 17, was the youngest player in the field of the Oklahoma State Amateur golf tournament where she advanced to the quarter-final round. After graduation from MHS, Morrow received an academic and golf scholarship to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ  where she played one season. Morrow returned home to attend Northeastern State University where she would graduate Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Morrow also captured the Women’s Club Championship at Muskogee Golf Club in 2020. Married to her husband, Jeff in 2016, the couple own their own property management company.  Morrow is the marketing and loan coordinator and processor for Muskogee Mortgage-McLaughlin Group.

Richard H. Moseley, Sr.

Considered by many to be one of the best athletes to ever play football for the Muskogee Roughers, Richard Moseley was captain of the 1943 team where he earned All-State honors as a tight end after playing only three games at that position. Most of Moseley’s heroics on the grassy field at Indian Bowl were accomplished while playing left half back. Following graduation from Muskogee Central High School in 1943, Moseley continued his football playing career at the University of Tulsa from 1944 through 1948 where he would gain prominence as Missouri Valley All-Conference tight end and being chosen to receive second team All-American tight end honors as well as playing defensive end for the Golden Hurricane. Moseley, who also played baseball at T-U, proved his toughness and grit as a boxer by winning the eastern Oklahoma Golden Gloves championship at 175 pounds.
An injury sustained his sophomore year at T-U would force Moseley to turn down offers to play professionally from the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.  Moseley began a successful coaching career in 1948 including head coaching positions over six seasons at Enid, Stigler and Talihina before going out of state for five seasons at Yoakum, TX from 1956 through 1961. Moseley came back to Oklahoma serving as an assistant coach at Talihina from 1962 through 1966 helping the Golden Tigers win the 1966 state championship. Moseley was also an educator and administrator serving as high school principal at Sallisaw High School from 1967 through 1970 and then as Superintendent of Schools in Sallisaw beginning in 1971 until his death in June, 1977. Married to his wife Mary Rush of Muskogee in 1947, the couple had two children, Janice Moseley Tyler and Richard Moseley, Jr. who also followed in their parent’s footsteps as educators and coaching. 

Alfred Neale

Alfred Neale, a graduating member of the Class of 2000 at Muskogee High School was an accomplished two-sport athlete for the Roughers. A four-year member of the varsity basketball team, Neale was part of the 1999 Class 6A state tournament team during his junior season. His talents earned Neale awards during his senior year including All-State honors in addition to being named as a McDonald’s All-American nominee in 2000. In track, Neale’s performances resulted in gold medal results running on the Roughers’ 4x100 state champion relay team in addition to breaking the Oklahoma high school state record in the high jump, a mark that remained the state’s best for 16 years. Neale’s high jump talents earned him All-State honors in addition to being named to the USA Junior Olympic Team.  On the collegiate level, while attending Barton County Kansas Community College track team, won the N-J-C-A-A Indoor and Outdoor High Jump gold medal. Neale transferred to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where he was the leading scorer for the Golden Norsemen and was named Bi-State Conference Co-Newcomer of the Year honors in 2003 while earning his Associates Degree. Recruited to the NCAA Division-I level for basketball by the University of New Mexico, Neale was part of the Lobos team that won the 2005 Mountain West Conference championship earning an appearance to the 2005 NCAA men’s basketball tournament. After college, Neale continued his basketball career competing with several teams in the NBA Development League as well as playing internationally in China, South America and Canada and later in the United States Basketball League.
Owner of Neale’s Basketball Academy and co-owner of Catz Boutique, Neale is an account executive with UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics. Alfred and his wife Catherine have three children, Alanna, A.J. and Aubrey.

 

James Lee Vogeli

A member of the Class of 2007 at Muskogee High School, James “Jamie” Vogeli was a four-year member of the Roughers golf teams who earned state tournament honors as an individual qualifier in 2005 and 2007. Vogeli’s accomplishments on the golf course include three-time All-Conference honors in 2005, 2006 and his senior year in 2007 where Vogeli was named to the All-State golf team. After graduation, the talented golfer continued his career at Missouri Southern State University where he played in every tournament for the Lions from his freshman through senior seasons. “Jamie” received All-MIAA honors in 2010 and 2011 including establishing an all-time school record individual low round score at Missouri Southern when he posted a 7-under par 65 while playing in the North Alabama University golf tournament. Vogeli graduated from Missouri Southern in 2011 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering Technology. Vogeli is currently employed as a Technical Sales Engineer with T.D. Williamson in Tulsa. He and his wife, Paige, are the parents of one daughter, Charlotte “Charlie” Penny Vogeli who was born in 2020.
Vogeli continues to prove his golf talents evidenced by winning the Oklahoma Golf Association’s State Amateur Championship in 2020, earning an invitation to play in the Oklahoma Open, a professional stroke play tournament where Jamie finished as the low amateur with a 54-hole score of 6-under par, 204 on the Oak Tree Country Club course in Edmond, OK.

A 1972 graduate of Tulsa McLain High School, James “Jamie” Young truly defines the meaning of a being a Muskogee Rougher. After graduating from the Central State University (now UCO) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1979, Young made Muskogee his home for life joining the Roughers football program as the head coach of the ninth grade team at Alice Robertson Junior High School. The following year, Young began an 18-year career as an assistant coach with the Roughers varsity football team from the Fall 1980 through Spring 1998. Young would serve Muskogee Public Schools as Athletic Director in 1999 and 2000 where he was honored as the Green Country Conference Outstanding Athletic Director. Young returned to the football program in 2001 through 2010 including holding the position as Director of Football Operations in 2008 and 2009. Young was one of only two Oklahoma football coaches in 2009 to be honored by the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association receiving the organization’s Special Recognition Award for outstanding work and dedication to the sport. Altogether, Young coached the Roughers to 26 victories in the large school football playoffs including six times reaching the state semifinals and help to coach Muskogee to the 1986 state championship after claiming the state runner-up trophy in 1985. In addition to his coaching career, Young dedicated himself to the students at Muskogee High School as a Zoology teacher. Young has volunteered his time and efforts with civic organizations dedicated to building a better Muskogee for everyone.  Married to his wife, Lisa for 38 years, the couple have two stepdaughters Kirsten Matthews Wilkins and Hilary Matthews Hansen and one granddaughter Harper Hansen.
