MPS Names Mike Sisco as Director of Bands

Mr. Mike Sisco was named Director of Bands at Muskogee Public School following the Board of Education regular meeting on Tuesday.MUSKOGEE, Okla. - The Muskogee Public Schools Board of Education approved the recommendation to hire Mike Sisco as Director of Bands during the regular board meeting on Tuesday.
Sisco joins MPS from Kellyville Public Schools where he has served as Director of Bands since 2018. Under his guidance, Kellyville bands received Superior Ratings at all OSSAA competitions for the first time in three decades. During the 2021 season, the Kellyville marching band placed third or higher in Class 3A at all Marching Festivals attended.
“We are extremely fortunate to add a leader of this caliber as our Director of Bands,” said Superintendent Dr. Jarod Mendenhall. “Mr. Sisco has led large high school band programs throughout his career with great success and his addition to our district leading our band program will be invaluable.”
Muskogee Public Schools will host a Meet and Greet for band students and their parents and guardians on Thursday, May 26, 2022. More information will be released at a later date.
When Sisco arrived at Kellyville the program had seven students and has grown to 80 students in a three-year period that has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sisco served in the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Scott DDG 995 and USS Ticonderoga. Following his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Oklahoma State where he was awarded the schools’ Outstanding Music Major award. He later graduated with his Masters in Trumpet Performance from the University of Nebraska.
After working as a Director of Bands in Iowa, Sisco joined Union Public Schools in Tulsa as an assistant. He then moved to Texas where he was named Associate Director of Bands at Lewisville High School. The Lewisville High School Symphonic Winds ensemble received consecutive superior ratings at all University Interscholastic League (UIL) events, earning sweepstakes honors each year. The Symphonic Winds ensemble performed at the 2003 Bands of America Concert Band Festival and Sisco was awarded a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association.
He joined Abilene Independent School District as the Director of Bands for Cooper High School. Under his direction, the Awesome Cooper Marching Band received superior ratings at all UIL Region 2 marching competitions and was a finalist band in the 2003 Lewisville Classic. In 2004, the band was named Grand Champions of the Lewisville Classic, winning 12 out of 13 first-place awards. The Cooper High School Wind Symphony received a superior rating in both concert and sight-reading at the Region 2 UIL concert band competition, making them a 2004 Sweepstakes Band. Under his supervision, all three competitive concert groups were awarded the sweepstakes award for the first time in the school’s history.
Sisco was honored as the 2005 Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He also served as an Adjunct Trumpet Professor at McMurry University in Abilene during that time.
Mike then transitioned to Mabank ISD as the Director of Bands, where the Panther Band was awarded the Bands of America Arlington Regional Class A Champions, sweeping all caption awards. The band also finished as Class A runner-up at the BOA Super Regional in San Antonio, winning the music caption. His ensembles received Superior Ratings at UIL and DC Festival events.
From 2006 to 2012, Sisco served as Director of Bands at Fossil Ridge High School. Under his direction, the Panther Regiment was a consistent finalist band in all area level competitions including The Tournament of Champions contest, HEB contest, The Golden Triangle Contest, Desoto Competition, and the Aledo Contest. His bands were consistent UIL Sweepstakes winners and were awarded the Best in Class/Best Overall Band at the Music of the Ozarks contest, held in Branson, Missouri in 2010. During his time at Fossil Ridge the band grew from 138 members to 220 members.
In 2013, Mike relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma as the Director of Bands for Tulsa School of Art and Sciences. Under his direction, TSAS High School Band was a 2015 OkMEA State Honor Band. The TSAS band received Superior Ratings at all competitions and Best in Class at all contests. The band was named Championship Band of the Verdigris Festival, NSU Festival (3A-6A Combo and Big Band), and TCC Festival (3A-6A Combo and Big Band). The Jazz Band was named State Championship Band OSSAA Jazz Contest Combo 3A and second Big Band overall.
