MPS Board of Education Approves Calendar, Later Start Date for 2020-2021 School Year
MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Muskogee Public Schools Board of Education voted Tuesday during a special board meeting to move the start of the school year to Monday, August 31.
In addition to approving the school calendar, the Board of Education approved minor changes to the Return to School Plan.
Students will return Aug. 31 for a week of instruction before taking Monday, Sept. 7 off for Labor Day followed by four days of virtual instruction (Sept. 8-11).
The calendar includes Virtual Days October 13-14 prior to Fall Break (Oct. 15-16), Nov. 2-3 and Nov. 23-24 prior to Thanksgiving Break (Nov. 25-27).
Winter Break will stretch from Monday, Dec. 21 through Friday, January 1, 2021. Students will return to school on Monday, Jan. 4 following Winter Break.
School will be out of session on Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and will be followed by Virtual Days Jan. 19-22. In observance of President’s Day there will be no school on Feb. 15, 2020 with Virtual Days held Feb. 16-19 with Feb. 17-19 being Professional Days for teachers and staff. Spring Break comes March 15-19.
The school year closes out with Virtual Days May 3-7 and Virtual Days May 24-26 with the 26th being the final day of school.
Teachers and staff will still have professional development August 3-7 with workdays held Aug. 10-14 with Meet the Teacher and Schedule Pick-Up to be held during the week.

Changes to the Return to School Plan included updated wording regarding masks. Masks are required for students and staff. For students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade, masks will be strongly encouraged, but will not be required inside the classroom. For students in 3rd through 12th grade, masks will be required in the classroom.
Wording regarding students and staff with underlying medical conditions was included in the update. Information within the document about signage was updated to include “Signage will be used at the front of each building to provide information about the expectations for mask use in the building.”
