Whittier Students Engineer and Build Candy Structures
MUSKOGEE, Okla. - Last week, students in Taylor Hennesy’s third grade class at Whittier Elementary completed a candy structure project as part of a STEM project.
Students listened to Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty before being put in groups. Each group was tasked with building the tallest structure without it falling over.
Students were given graphing paper among their groups and sown the candy they would be using to form their candy structure. Students in each group collaborated with their group members and brainstormed ideas for their structure. Once an agreement was made for the design each group member drew a blueprint.
After the plan was drawn, work began in using various gummy candies and toothpicks. Improvisation was required when certain areas of their plans and drawings didn’t come to fruition. After problem solving and production of the structures over a set amount of time each structure was measured. The winning structure was 11 inches tall as built for the students.
